2022 Inquiry - Preliminary findings

My preliminary findings as of May 2022

• At Glen Taylor School, we have 31 Year 8 students.
• 13 of these students have a connection to Tamaki College by way of a sibling or family tie (parent/aunt/uncle/nana/papa work at Tamaki college).
• 5 of our students are currently living out of the Tamaki College Enrolment Zone which means 26 of our students are guaranteed a spot at Tamaki College (see image below for zone)
• 6 of our students who live within the Tamaki College zone have a connection to either Selwyn or Glendowie by way of a sibling currently or previously attending the school.
• Tamaki College doesn't seem to be the first choice for many of our students or families. Of the 25 students I asked, 20 were in zone for Tamaki College but only 3 were able to confidently say that they are definitely going to Tamaki College. The other 20 students weren't sure where they were going but they were able to say that Tamaki College isn't their first choice. Schools like Glendowie and Selwyn were other options.
• Only 2 families responded to my google form. These two families are in zone for Tamaki and have listed Tamaki College as the school of choice. One of these famillies is also looking at applying to Glendowie (out of zone).

Although it is only May, I'm learning that high school options are conversations that aren't occuring this early on in the year but it should be happening as early on as the first term. Term 4 is a manic scramble, often with students asking their teachers to write letters to support their application. What I hope to create with this transition, is that these conversations of high school options are at the forefront of our family's and student's minds, that we are sending our students to the best possible school that will support them in their learning, interests and growth.
