Reading Practice Intensive Day 1 (Teacher hat on) 



Today has been a great way to reflect on my own understanding of the kaupapa and pedagogy of the Manaiakalani Reading Programme. The benefits of having a common practice reading model is that it creates a space for consistency to grow and happen, but also to identify areas of development and support that may possibly be needed for teachers within our school. So, how can we build a common practice reading model that is consistent across our school so that it serves our readers and creates a community of tauira who love to read?

R - Recognise
A - Amplify
T - Turbo charge

Recognise - Data shows that there is a consistent pattern around the teaching of reading and that the needs of our children aren't being met or amplified. The great thing is we identify and recognise this as an area that needs our attention and therefore now, can focus and inquire into the teaching and learning of reading and build a community of readers. 

Amplify - 1.5 years is the minimum for our tauira that are lagging behind. In this, I have more wonderings and need to reflect more on my own practice. What am I doing currently to amplify the teaching of reading? What am I doing in my setting to amplify a community of readers? How can I help shift and influence perceptions on reading?  

Turbo Charge - What is currently working really well for our learners? Mirrors and windows - this concept is going really well and our students are beginning to drive the conversations and make connections to themselves and the wider world. Next step to turbo charge this learning is creating opportunities where our learners can step through the sliding door and experience this world from the comfort of our home in GI. 

One small thing I can start straight away is providing our readers an opportunity and the space to be able to discuss, share and offer suggestions about their ideas on what they're reading. This provides a platform for extended discussion. 

Gosh I love meeting new people and being able to connect! That has truly been the highlight of my day 1.

Every document that is available and related to Pasifika and Maori learning is focused on Teacher Practice. This is the heart of the matter. Until teachers change their attitudes and practice student learning will stagnate. My focus is on teacher practice looking at Cultural Responsiveness.  Do teachers know their students' cultures? Where they were born? Language spoken at home? Who they live with?  What their students’ home responsibilities are? Is there evidence of each child’s culture in the classrooms? Beyond that - do teachers know their students’ stories? And what to do with that gold? Without this crucial information and a change in attitudes and practice, our tamariki will struggle to make connections, stay connected and be confident, all of which are outcomes of student learning.  Bishop et al (2014) expresses that new cultures or ethnicities require teachers to engage quickly and positively with learners from any culture and background so that their learners can progress

TAPASA

  I think quite often we get a bit scared to dive into these documents that we have sitting in our schools. It's often pushed to the side as other things have importance but seriously, this document needs to be used and time is given to unpack it. In the current times, it may not seem like a priority, but if you have Pasifika learners and families and are struggling to engage with them - pick up this document and get cracking.  Each time I spend time on this I learn something new, have another 'AH HA' moment.  A year ago I attended a  Tapasa Workshop  through Senior Teacher. Together with a colleague we unpacked each turu and identified what we've done in our school that fell into that compentency.  If you're not sure where to start - this is a good place to. Take each turu, one by one and unpack. Identify what you do in your school that is evidence of this. The great thing with this document is that it identifies what it looks like at different phases of your teach
